Barossa Wineries

Balthazar of the Barossa Winery: Located in Marananga this is one of the Barossa wineries that has done very well for itself since it was first established in 1998. Winemaker Anita Bowen planted the first vines on the 75 acres of land which was an original 19th century vineyard. With great effort Anita sourced her shiraz vines from one of the oldest vineyards in the Barossa Valley, which dates back to 1847. Balthazar’s grapes include shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, grenache, chardonnay, and viognier. The wines are This Barossa wineries most popular wine is the Balthazar Shiraz, which is a dense rich red with concentrated plum and blackberry fruits which offers a lasting experience on the palate. This Shiraz is aged in American and French oak barrels for up to two years before being bottled and released. The Balthazar Shiraz has won many awards including the 2004 release winning a silver medal at the 2007 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Its 2005 release received a gold medal at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show in 2007.

Heritage Wines:  set over 20 acres in Marananga, Heritage Wines was first established in 1984 by owner and winemaker Steve Hoff, this is one of the Barossa wineries which offer you a relaxed and enjoyable cellar door experience.  Although their range may be small, it is of exceptional quality and their focus is on producing unique and characteristic bold wines.  Their method of dry grown vines is their key to achieving concentrated varietal flavours in the wines they produce.  They produce a powerful Rossco’s Shiraz which is a bold Barossan red and their flagship wine, a Barossa Shiraz which is a full bodied wine, a Caberbet Sauvignon, Cabernet Malbec, Semillon, and two fortified wines, the Tokay and Tawny.  Heritage Wines is becoming popular with the international market, and export demands to the USA, UK, and Europe are increasing each year.

Two Hands Winery:   this was recently voted as one of Australia’s top 10 cellar doors, and it is certainly one of the best Barossa wineries this region has to offer.  Established in 1999 these two winemakers of Two Hands Winery set out to make the best shiraz based wines the Barossa could produce.  Their flagship wines include the Ares Shiraz, a deep flavoured and powerful Barossa shiraz matured in 100% new French oak, the Aphrodite Cabernet Sauvignon which is sourced from the one single mature Barossa Valley vineyard, and the Aerope Grenache which is a rich and fruity quality wine.  Two Hands Winery also offer a cellar door only release, which is the Showroom Only Series.  These 6 wines are a great collection of limited wines that are produced in very small quantities.  The two shiraz and one muscat wines are certainly an enjoyable quality taste.  Said of Two Hands Winery Cellar Door from the Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine 2005, “...a cellar door quite unlike any other...this has fast become a mecca for anyone who loves modern Australian wine.  One of the Barossa’s best...”

Whistler Wines:   a family run vineyard and cellar door, Whistler Wines was first established with 4 hectares of shiraz being planted by one of two brothers who now both run this quality vineyard.  They have a great variety of wines which include dry grown Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Mouvedre, Riesling, Semillon, and a fortified Shiraz.  Whistler Wines is one of the more family oriented Barossa wineries and holds many public events on the annual Barossa Valley’s calendar such as Australia Day Celebrations, a Barrel Shed Concert, Gourmet Weekend events, and Shakespeare in the Vines.  Their cellar door not only offers its welcome visitors some great tasting wines, but you can enjoy some tasty cheese platters over a game of Petanque, while the children play on the swings, or even enjoy a family bbq on their open use facilities they provide to all their guests.
