The Barossa – Angaston

Angaston is considered to be the most English of all the Barossa townships. It is a very quaint town in the Barossa which still retains its farming community and feel. Angaston has certainly not given in to the pressure of tourism, and for this reason, it is a wonderful little town to visit and, if you are luck with availability of accommodation, to stay. Angaston, one of the smaller townships in the Barossa, has a lot to offer the tourist. From top class wineries and great restaurants, to some wonderful local businesses of great interest. Angaston was settle by George Fife Angas in the 1850’s and its location is one of the highest points in the Barossa, and for that has a higher than average rain fall for the region. For this reason Angaston produces some varied tasting wines from what is produced on the Valley Floor (Tanunda and Nuriootpa areas).

Probably the most notable winery in Angaston is Yalumba, which was founded by Englishman Samuel Smith.  Moving to the Barossa in 1849, Samuel along with his son Sidney planted the first vines on their 30 acre block of land.  Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery and this is clear in the experience of visiting their cellar door.  Steeped in heritage, Yalumba wines are inviting and exciting.  The staff at the cellar door are warm and hospitable, you will certainly enjoy your wine tasting experience at Yalumba, whether it is for two, or for a group master tasting session with their head wine makers.  Another popular winery is Saltrams, who offer some great tasting wines, and  also have a very popular restaurant, serving great meals that are complemented by their selection of wines.  Vintners is another popular winery in Angaston which also has a restaurant.  Vintners is popular with the locals, so it pays to book in advance here.

Apart from the great wineries and cellar doors, Angaston also has a variety of attractions.  The most popular of these is the Barossa Farmers Market, which takes place every Saturday morning from 7.30am to 11am.  The Market is very popular, and is a great place to pick up locally made food and products directly from the family homes and farms of the Barossa Valley.  From meats, cheeses, breads, jams and preserves, and fruit and vegetables, the Barossa Farmers Market is a great place to meet, eat, and pick up some great food.

Other great attractions in Angaston include the South Australia Company Store showcasing tasty local produce, Angas Park Fruit Shop which offers premium quality dried fruit products.  Angas Park produce some of the more well respected food products throughout Australia.  Angaston Cottage Industries offers a large selection of homemade goods, local produce, and arts and crafts, all made by local women.  Angaston Cottage Industries was first established in 1972.  One thing Angaston is well known for is its great selection of antique shops.  Antiques and More at 24 is a classic country cottage antique store.  The Barossa Valley Cheese Company was first established in 2003, and is quickly gaining a reputation for quality tasty and innovative cheese products, all made locally from local supplies.  Blonde Coffee is a great place to meet, eat, and enjoy a great tasting cup of coffee.

As you can see Angaston has much to offer.  With a good selection of Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Angaston, your stay here will be thoroughly enjoyed, and we know you will look forward to returning again.
