The Barossa – Greenock

The Barossa is home to Greenock which is a small town located just off the Sturt Highway, approximately 65 km north of Adelaide, in the north west region of the Barossa Valley. Greenock, named by James Smith, secretary to George Fife Angas, after a town by the same name in Scotland, is often known as ‘Little Scotland’. It is a quaint country town with tree lined streets and some beautiful old stone buildings. Greenock, in the Barossa Valley, is also located on the famous Heysen Trail. Greenock was first settled in the mid 1800’s by Scottish settlers.

The Barossa Brewing Company is a boutique privately owned brewery who pride themselves on using natural ingredients, with traditional methods, to produce quality ales, all based on traditional German brewing methods (the German Purity Law of 1516 – Reinheitsgebot).  Established in 1998, they have some distinctive ales which include The Miller’s Larger, Greenock Dark Ale, and Wheatstore Ale.  They are located in the historic 1860’s Wheat Store, and have a quaint traditional style viewing area and tasting room.

Greenock’s Murray Street Vineyards, known for producing wines with great flavour and generosity consists of 35 acres, planted from the 1940’s and on, of dry grown grapes, which go to giving the wines some very distinct seasonal flavours and characteristics.  Head winemaker Andrew Seppelt has much experience in the industry and it can be clearly seen in his passion and commitment to Murray Street Vineyards.  It is a great place to taste some of their wines, relax and unwind in their beautiful surroundings.

The Greenock Aviation Museum, a private collection, includes preserved aircraft, replicas, restored projects, scale model aircraft, and general aviation memorabilia.  The museum houses the largest collection on public display of 1/72 scale model aircraft in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 1,400 models displayed.

The Greenock Tavern is a great place to meet and have a nice meal, and a friendly chat with the locals.

The small hamlet of Greenock has kept true to its rich heritage and hold true to a strong sense of community.  The local Greenock Post Office, which was first established in the 1880, is still in operation today.

Greenock’s Old Telegraph Station Bed & Breakfast offers some wonderful accommodation, in what was the first and original Telegraph Station in the Barossa Valley, built in 1860.  The cottage has been beautifully restored, offering a relaxed cottage appeal.

A visit to the Barossa Valley is not complete without having first visited, or even stayed, in the quaint little township of Greenock, where the locals are friendly and make you feel like you are a local too.
